The documentary and the article the new movie is based on are both incredibly touching. I remember him from my own youth, and I didn't know how many waves he had made even before I was born.
Suffice it to say, while it looks syrupy, the man was the genuine article and somehow managed to be as genuinely compassionate he is depicted. And Tom Hanks is pretty much the only person in Hollywood who could even come close to reaching that level of genuine compassion and not come off sarcastic.
