Intense war movie based on the novel by Erich Maria Remarque. It tells the story of a young German soldier on the Western Front of World War I. Paul and his comrades experience first-hand how the initial euphoria of war turns into desperation and fear as they fight for their lives, and each other, in the trenches. Among the better known cast members are Daniel Brühl and Devid Striesow.
Sometimes you need a reminder that war is hell. Though with a war raging in Europe, reading daily about the systematic terrorist attacks and war crimes that Russia is committing, a movie about World War I seems less urgent. Nevertheless, festival reviews are very favourable. Is already streaming on Netflix.

The somewhat controversial vampire/cannibalism horror drama that tells the story of first love between Maren (Taylor Russell), a young woman learning how to survive on the margins of society, and Lee (Timothée Chalamet), an intense and disenfranchised drifter; a liberating road odyssey of two young people coming into their own, searching for identity and chasing beauty in a perilous world that cannot abide who they are. Mark Rylance, Michael Stuhlbarg, André Holland, Jessica Harper and Chloë Sevigny are also part of the cast. Directed by Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name, A Bigger Splash, Suspiria).

Date: 4 Nov 2022 15:29 (UTC)Avatar looks...weightless. Very very pretty, but there wasn't a single moment that made me feel anything other than "That's pretty". Which is basically how I felt with the first one too.
All Quiet on the Western Front looks amazingly well done, and gripping. I agree that we already know war is bad, but I find it hard to begrudge films that well made.
Bones and All looks very well made too. Small scale, intense, dark, unpleasant. The kind of thing that can revitalise a genre somewhat.
Spirited looks great - I love that it's set in a world where people know that A Christmas Carol exists!

Date: 5 Nov 2022 12:10 (UTC)All Quiet on the Western Front: I haven't read it, but the book here in Germany is considered a bit of a classic. Part of me wants to see this new adaptation, but right now I really feel I'm aware well enough that war is hell.
Bones and All: Apparently it really is rather unpleasant regarding specific scenes.
