The Wedding Banquet     HD1080p 38MB
Remake of an Ang Lee relationship comedy/drama. It's about a chosen family navigating the disasters and delights of family expectations, queerness, and cultural identity. Angela (Kelly Marie Tran) and her partner Lee (Lily Gladstone) have been unlucky with their IVF treatments, but can’t afford to pay for another round. Meanwhile their friend Min (Han Gi-chan), the closeted scion of a multinational corporate empire, has plenty of family money but a soon-to-expire student visa. When his commitment-phobic boyfriend Chris (Bowen Yang) rejects his proposal, Min makes the offer to Angela instead: a green card marriage in exchange for funding Lee’s IVF. But their plans to quietly elope are upended when Min’s skeptical grandmother (Youn Yuh-jung) flies in from Korea unannounced, insisting on an all-out wedding extravaganza.
Received favourable reviews earlier this year in Sundance.

Materialists     HD720p 34MB
Romantic relationship drama about a young, ambitious New York City matchmaker (Dakota Johnson) who finds herself torn between the perfect match (Pedro Pascal) and her imperfect ex (Chris Evans). The love triangle begins to have harsh and life-threatening effects on her clients as business mixes with romance. Written and directed Celine Song (Past Lives).

The Shrouds     HD720p 21MB
Trailer for the latest "horror" movie written and directed by David Cronenberg (Eastern Promises, The Fly, Crash). Set in an eerie, deceptively placid near-future, a techno-entrepreneur named Karsh (Vincent Cassel) has developed a new software that will allow the bereaved to bear witness to the gradual decay of loved ones dead and buried in the earth. While Karsh is still reeling from the loss of his wife (Diane Kruger) from cancer - and falling into a peculiar sexual relationship with his wife’s sister (also Kruger) - a spate of vandalized graves utilizing his “shroud” technology begins to put his enterprise at risk, leading him to uncover a potentially vast conspiracy. Guy Pearce and Sandrine Holt are also part of the cast.
Festival reviews are very mixed.

A Minecraft Movie     HD720p 37MB
Full trailer for the live-action film adaptation of the video game. Four misfits (Jason Momoa, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks) are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they'll have to master this world while embarking on a quest with an unexpected, expert crafter (Jack Black). Jennifer Coolidge, Kate McKinnon and Jemaine Clement are also part of the cast. Directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre, Gentlemen Broncos).
I hesitate to say it, but I think this looks pleasantly weird.

Lilo & Stitch     HD720p 31MB
Another "live-action re-imagining" of an animated film. Stitch goes on an out-of-this-world adventure after a daring escape from a galactic space station that takes him to Earth. Lilo and Stitch become acquainted as Stitch not only learns the customs and traditions of life on Earth, but also the core values of family. Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On).
I don't know why either.

The design of it actually looks pretty similar. Lots of uses of actual things from the game. I enjoyed all of the trailer except for Jason Momoa. I may take the kids!

Re: your last question: Money. And it's a shame, because I love Lilo & Stitch, and they could remake it perfectly well "live action". But it looks like they've made it cuter in ways that set my teeth on edge.

Minecraft Movie actually looked like tolerable fun.

Materialists looks like it could either be entertaining or have me throwing things at the screen.

I hadn't realised that Ang Lee had basically vanished for the last decade or so.

Materialists, yes. It feels like it's setting up a thing that "Rich competent sexy men may be nice, but they'll never be the same as the terrible man-child you fell for when you were in your teens." And it wasn't at all clear what the view on relationships/love/etc. was. So it's possible it's being clever and interesting and all will be fine. But a fair number of women I know were deeply sceptical.

Last Ang Lee movie I enjoyed was Life of Pi.

I didn't *hate* Hulk. But I did think it was a mess, and I preferred the Edward Norton movie.
