Trailer for the latest movie written and directed by Spike Jonze (Where the Wild Things Are, Being John Malkovich, Adaptation.). It is a love story set in Los Angeles, slightly in the future. It follows Theodore Twombly, a complex, soulful man (Joaquin Phoenix) who makes his living writing touching, personal letters for other people. Heartbroken after the end of a long relationship, he becomes intrigued with a new, advanced operating system, which promises to be an intuitive entity in its own right, individual to each user. Upon initiating it, he is delighted to meet "Samantha," a bright, female voice (Scarlett Johansson), who is insightful, sensitive and surprisingly funny. As her needs and desires grow, in tandem with his own, their friendship deepens into an eventual love for each other. Also part of the cast are Amy Adams, Rooney Mara and Olivia Wilde.
Looks very interesting. I may even enjoy watching Phoenix.

It's difficult for me not to think of live action role-playing with expensive special effects.

Set on an incontrovertible collision course off the coast of Somalia, both men will find themselves paying the human toll for economic forces outside of their control. Catherine Keener is also part of the cast. Directed by Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Ultimatum, Green Zone, Bloody Sunday).
Trailer reveals that this seems to be more than just an action thriller.

It boasts that it's from the producers of Bridget Jones's Diary and directed by Dan Mazer who produced Borat and all the other movies from Sacha Baron Cohen which should give you an idea of the somewhat mixed tone of the jokes.
