If you're sorely missing black-and-white silent movies at this year's Oscars I can offer this beautiful homage from Spain that relocates the tale of Snow White to a romantic vision of 1920s Spain. Young Carmen is our Snow White, daughter of a once-renowned matador crippled in the ring and grieving for his wife, who died during childbirth. We are given a swift and fiery account of Carmen's upbringing by her flamenco dancer grandmother (Ángela Molina), her torment at the hands of her tyrannical stepmother Encarna (Maribel Verdú) and her secret schooling in the art of bullfighting by her father, just before his malicious new wife enacts a terrible revenge on him. Knowing that she's in mortal danger, she escapes and joins a travelling troupe of bullfighting dwarves, eventually rising to fame in the corrida under the stage name Blancanieves.
This was Spain's entry for Best Foreign Language Film this year. You can choose between the US teaser and trailer and the trailer version from France.

Action thriller in which the White House (Secret Service Code: "Olympus") is captured by a terrorist mastermind (Rick Yune) and the President (Aaron Eckhart) is kidnapped. A disgraced former Presidential guard (Gerard Butler) finds himself trapped within the building. As "our" national security team scrambles to respond, they are forced to rely on his inside knowledge to help retake the White House, save the President, and avert an even bigger disaster. Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett, Dylan McDermott, Ashley Judd and Radha Mitchell were also lured to be in the movie. Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Shooter, Training Day, Brooklyn's Finest).
I guess Bruce Willis wasn't available. Sadly missing is also any sense of irony that may possibly make this digestible. If the links don't hold you can watch it online here.

First teaser for this thriller in which someone is attacking big corporate CEOs and forcing them to consume harmful products they manufacture. An elite private intelligence firm is called into action and contracts an ex-FBI agent (Brit Marling) to infiltrate a mysterious anarchist collective, The East, suspected to be responsible. As she goes undercover she soon finds that the closer she gets to the action, the more she sympathises with the group's charismatic leaders (Alexander Skarsgård, Ellen Page). Julia Ormond, Patricia Clarkson, Shiloh Fernandez and Toby Kebbell are also part of the cast. The second collaboration of Marling and director Zal Batmanglij (Sound of My Voice).
While I suspect the fast-cut teaser is a bit misleading for this low budget movie, it nevertheless looks interesting.

Dark comedy about a young couple (Juno Temple, Michael Angarano) that lives in small-town America - married, very much in love, and broke. But an accident leads them to a roadside antique shop where they stumble upon an antique teapot. As the days pass, the luckless couple soon realises this is no ordinary teapot: it miraculously produces wads of cash whenever one of them feels physical pain — the greater the pain, the greater the payout. Excited by this unimaginable (and freakish) turn of events, they gleefully rack up injuries, raking in enough dough to pay off their debt and move out of their tiny bungalow into a lavish mansion on the rich side of town.

I already posted two trailers for Korean director Park Chan-wook's (Oldboy, Lady Vengeance, Thirst) first English language movie but this short trailer from the UK is just too well-made and pleasantly disturbing to pass up. After a young woman's (Mia Wasikowska) father (Dermot Mulroney) dies in an auto accident, her uncle (Matthew Goode), who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her emotionally unstable mother (Nicole Kidman). Soon after his arrival, she comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives, but instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless girl becomes increasingly infatuated with him.
