The Giver     HD540p 28MB   HD720p 54MB
Full trailer, now partially in black and white, for the adaptation of a young adult novel by Lois Lowry set in a dystopian world. It centres on Jonas (Brenton Thwaites), a young man who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community. Cast members include Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Katie Holmes, Alexander SkarsgÄrd, and a little bit of stunt-casting in the form of Taylor Swift. Directed by Phillip Noyce (The Quiet American, Rabbit-Proof Fence, Salt).
Given the surveillance state we already live in, I should probably start to more often substitute dystopian for contemporary.

Hercules     US HD720p 143MB    NZ 720p 38MB
Full trailer for this swords and sandals action movie based on a graphic novel with a revisionist take on the classic myth. Haunted by a sin from his past, Hercules (Dwayne Johnson) has become a mercenary. Along with five faithful companions, he travels ancient Greece selling his services for gold and using his legendary reputation to intimidate enemies. But when the benevolent ruler of Thrace and his daughter seek Hercules' help to defeat a savage and terrifying warlord, he finds that in order for good to triumph and justice to prevail he must again become the hero he once was. Also part of the cast are Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell, Joseph Fiennes, Peter Mullan, John Hurt and Aksel Hennie. Directed by Brett Ratner (Rush Hour 3, After the Sunset, X-Men 3).
Always interesting to compare trailer versions (well, if you write a blog about movie trailers). But rarely is the discrepancy as strong as here, giving almost the impression there are actually two different movie versions. While the US trailer continues to bathe in ill-conceived seriousness and bad looking CGI, the New Zealand one has lots of quips and amusing one-liners that I think are essential to make this whole thing watchable. If the movie tanks in the US I'd put the blame squarely on the trailer.

A Walk Among the Tombstones     HD480p 20MB   HD720p 92MB
Very dark thriller in which an ex-NYPD cop (Liam Neeson) who now works as an unlicensed private investigator operating just outside the law. When Scudder reluctantly agrees to help a heroin trafficker (Dan Stevens) hunt down the men who kidnapped and then brutally murdered his wife, the PI learns that this is not the first time these men have committed this sort of twisted crime nor will it be the last.

Very Good Girls     HD480p 13MB   HD720p 64MB
Coming-of-Age drama about two best friends (Dakota Fanning, Elizabeth Olsen), home for one last New York summer, who make a pact to lose their virginity before leaving for college. But when they both fall for the same handsome artist (Boyd Holbrook) and one of them starts seeing him in secret, a lifelong friendship is tested. also part of the cast are Demi Moore, Richard Dreyfuss, Ellen Barkin, Peter Sarsgaard, and Clark Gregg.
Already premiered in Sundance January 2013, so independent distributors didn't necessarily rush to bring this into theatres.

A Coffee in Berlin - Oh Boy     HD480p 20MB
Comedic drama in black and white from Germany that paints a day in the life of Niko, a twenty-something college dropout going nowhere fast. Niko lives for the moment as he drifts through the streets of Berlin, oblivious to his growing status as an outsider. Then on one fateful day, everything changes: his girlfriend dumps him, his father cuts off his allowance, and a strange psychiatrist dubiously confirms his "emotional imbalance." Unable to ignore the consequences of his passivity any longer, he finally concludes that he has to engage with life.
Movie won pretty much all major categories it was nominated for at last year's German Film Awards. It is a nice little movie, and I'm glad it got recognised, but I'm not sure how well it travels.
