The film festival in Cannes just ended with the announcement of the winners. Some more trailers for the participating films got released recently which I will post in this entry. For a lot of films there aren't yet trailers available. But if you're interested you can find for pretty much all movies a clip or two, as well as the Q&A press conferences and the photo calls on the festival's home page.

Personal Shopper     HD720p 31MB
Mysterious ghost story about Maureen (Kristen Stewart), mid-20s, who has a job she hates: seeing to the wardrobe of a media celebrity. She couldn't find anything better to pay for her stay in Paris. And wait. Wait for a sign from the spirit of her twin brother, who died a few months earlier. Until then, her life will stay on hold. Movie re-unites Stewart with writer/director Olivier Assayas who directed her in his previous film Clouds of Sils Maria for which Stewart won a César. Also reappearing from Sils Maria are Lars Eidinger and Nora von Waldstätten, Anders Danielsen Lie is also part of the cast.
Movie itself divided the audience, but Stewart got a long standing ovation. The French love her.

Elle     HD720p 34MB
Thriller drama centring on a woman (Isabelle Huppert) who seems indestructible. Head of a leading video game company, she brings the same ruthless attitude to her love life as to business. Being attacked in her home by an unknown assailant changes her life forever. When she resolutely tracks the man down, they are both drawn into a curious and thrilling game - a game that may, at any moment, spiral out of control. Laurent Lafitte, Virginie Efira, Christian Berkel, Anne Consigny and Charles Berling are also part of the cast. Directed by Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct, Black Book, RoboCop).
Even though (or maybe because) it is a very tough subject, the film was very well received.

Toni Erdmann     HD720p 30MB
This is, as one reviewer put it, a very good example of "that reputed oxymoron, a German comedy". Practical joker Winfried (Peter Simonischek) disguises himself as flashy "Toni Erdmann" to get busy Ines’ (Sandra Hüller) attention and change her corporate lifestyle. The father-daughter challenge reaches absurd proportions until Ines begins to see that her eccentric father deserves a place in her life. Written and directed by Maren Ade (Everyone Else).
It's unusual that a comedy takes part in the official competition and that it is one of the most well-received titles. It was by many seen as a likely the winner. But unfortunately it received none of the prizes.

The Handmaiden - Ah-ga-ssi     HD720p 17MB
Short, dialogue-free international teaser for the latest movie directed by Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Stoker, Thirst) that reveals that it will be another visual treat. 1930s Korea, in the period of Japanese occupation, a new girl is hired as a handmaiden to a Japanese heiress who lives a secluded life on a large countryside estate with her domineering Uncle. But the maid has a secret. She is a pickpocket recruited by a swindler posing as a Japanese Count to help him seduce the Lady to elope with him, rob her of her fortune, and lock her up in a madhouse. The plan seems to proceed according to plan until Sookee and Hideko discover some unexpected emotions.
There's also a subtitled teaser from Korea on YouTube that probably gives a better impression of the movie: YouTube Tsr.

Slack Bay - Ma Loute     HD720p 33MB
Farcical comedy set in the summer 1910. Several tourists have vanished on the beaches of the Channel Coast. Infamous inspectors Machin and Malfoy soon gather that these mysterious disappearances take place in Slack Bay. There lives a community of fishermen. Among them evolves a curious family, the Brufort, lead by the father "The Eternal", who rules as best as he can on his prankster bunch of sons, especially the impetuous Ma Loute. Towering high above the bay stands the Van Peteghems' mansion. Every summer, this degenerate bourgeois family (Fabrice Luchini, Juliette Binoche, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi) stagnates in the villa, not without mingling during their leisure hours with the local people.
This comedy was a lot well-received. But you can see a number of first rate European actors having a lot of fun.

Julieta     HD720p 22MB
Short trailer from France for the latest movie written and directed by Pedro Almodóvar (Volver, Talk to Her, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown), based on three short stories by Alice Munro. It is a drama about a mother's struggle to survive uncertainty. Julieta (Emma Suárez) lives in Madrid with her daughter Antía. They both suffer in silence over the loss of Xoan, Antía’s father and Julieta’s husband. But at times grief doesn’t bring people closer, it drives them apart. When Antía turns eighteen she abandons her mother, without a word of explanation. Julieta looks for her in every possible way, but all she discovers is how little she knows of her daughter.
Reviews gave the impression that this is one of Almodóvar's more minor works.

The Red Turtle - La tortue rouge     HD720p 31MB
Taking part in the Un Certain Regard section, an animated, dialogue-free fable which, through the story of a man shipwrecked on a tropical island inhabited by turtles, crabs and birds, recounts the milestones in the life of a human being.
Certainly far removed from mainstream animated movies. But it is co-produced by Studio Ghibli and the studio's co-founder Isao Takahata served as an artistic producer.
