Over the years, Kathy tries her best to navigate her husband’s untamed nature and his allegiance to Johnny, with whom she feels she must compete for Benny’s attention. Michael Shannon, Mike Faist, Norman Reedus and Boyd Holbrook are also part of the cast. Directed by Jeff Nichols (Mud, Take Shelter, Midnight Special).
Hard not to think of Marlon Brando.

Festival reviews praise the performance of Bening. After a brief theatrical run, will start streaming on Netflix November 3rd.

Drama that tells the true story of Sir Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton (Anthony Hopkins), a young London broker, who, in the months leading up to World War II, rescued 669 children from the Nazis. He visited Prague in December 1938 and found families who had fled the rise of the Nazis in Germany and Austria, living in desperate conditions with little or no shelter and food, and under threat of Nazi invasion. He immediately realised it was a race against time. How many children could he and the team rescue before the borders closed? Johnny Flynn plays the young Winton, Helena Bonham Carter, Lena Olin, Jonathan Pryce and Romola Garai are also part of the cast.
Festival reviews praise Hopkins' performance. The emotional final scene the movie works towards is an episode of the BBC television show "That’s Life!". If you aren't already familiar with it decide for yourself, if you want to watch the scene beforehand.

The Boy and the Heron - Kimitachi wa dô ikiru ka     HD720p 14MB
Teaser for the latest - and probably last - movie directed by Hayao Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle). It's a semi-autobiographical fantasy story about a young boy named Mahito who longs for his mother enabling him to embark into the world now shared by both the living and the dead. He enters a magical world with a talking grey heron after finding an abandoned tower in his new town.
Trailer is only one minute long. But keep in mind that the movie premiered in Japan a few months months ago without any advertising or trailers at all.

Extended trailer for this sci-fi fantasy movie directed by Zack Snyder (Man of Steel, 300, Sucker Punch). When a peaceful colony on the edge of a galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival. Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Mother World, she assembles a small band of warriors — outsiders, insurgents, peasants and orphans of war from different worlds who share a common need for redemption and revenge. Charlie Hunnam, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, Djimon Hounsou, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Cleopatra Coleman and Jena Malone are also part of the cast.
Summary and trailer give the impression of a 'best of' other sci-fi movies and franchises, especially Star Wars. Will start streaming on Netflix December 22, with the second part to be released in April next year.

The body was discovered by the victim’s boyfriend and colleague, Will (Justin Timberlake), with whom she fought the night before. The victim’s ex (Karl Glusman), to whom she was still married, is possibly a drug dealer. Meanwhile, an eccentric man (Michael Pitt) with a longstanding grudge against Will and his family seems to take an unhealthy interest in the case. Alicia Silverstone is also part of the cast.

In the lucha libre wrestling scene of Juárez, Mexico, gay luchador Saúl (Gael Garcia Bernal) is tired of playing El Topo, a nondescript, masked runt who always loses his matches. He wants to be a star. His fierce new trainer, Sabrina, suggests he develop an exótico character — an unmasked, stereotypically effeminate role audiences love to hate. But exóticos never get to win. All that changes when Saúl debuts the flamboyant and powerful Cassandro, who captures the crowd’s attention and affection.
Was very well received at Sundance, many reviews praising Bernal's performance. After a limited theatrical release, will start streaming on Amazon Prime September 22nd.

The impoverished captain Ludvig Kahlen (Mads Mikkelsen) sets out to conquer the harsh, uninhabitable Danish heath with a seemingly impossible goal: to build a colony in the name of the King. In exchange, he’ll receive a desperately desired Royal name for himself. But the sole ruler of the area, the merciless Frederik de Schinkel, arrogantly believes this land belongs to him. When De Schinkel learns that the maid and her servant husband have escaped for refuge with Kahlen, the privileged and spiteful ruler swears revenge, doing everything in his power to drive the captain away. Movie re-unites Mikkelsen with writer/director Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair).
Will take part in the official competition next week in Venice.

It's a dark satire that takes place in a universe in which Augusto Pinochet is a 250-year-old vampire who, tired of being remembered as a thief, decides to die. Will take part in the official competition in Venice at the end of the month. And starting September 15th will have a theatrical release and start streaming on Netflix.

Full trailer for the latest movie directed by Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Robin Hood). This time it's a historical drama about Napoleon (Joaquin Phoenix). It takes a personal look at the French military leader’s origins and swift, ruthless climb to emperor. The story is viewed through the prism of Napoleon’s addictive, volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine (Vanessa Kirby).
Looks pretty monumental. Apple co-produced, so after a theatrical run starting Thanksgiving, it will probably become available on their streaming service soon thereafter.

Origin story that tells the wondrous story of how the world’s greatest inventor, magician and chocolate-maker became the beloved Willy Wonka we know today. It will introduce audiences to a young Willy Wonka (Timothée Chalamet) and how he met the Oompa-Loompas on one of his earliest adventures. Keegan-Michael Key, Matt Lucas, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Jim Carter, Olivia Colman and Hugh Grant are also part of the cast. Directed by Paul King who was responsible for the two Paddington movies.
To be in theatres in December.

Second trailer for the latest movie directed by Martin Scorsese (Goodfellas, The Departed, Casino). It's a crime drama set in 1920s Oklahoma and depicts the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation, a string of brutal crimes that came to be known as the Reign of Terror. Cast members include Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, Jesse Plemons, Brendan Fraser, Tantoo Cardinal and John Lithgow.
Premiered in Cannes in May where it received very favourable reviews. It has a running time of almost 3 1/2 hours. Theatrical release in set for October, but since they co-produced the film, it will probably start streaming on AppleTV soon thereafter.

As The Authority’s newest employee, he finds it difficult to connect with his enigmatic desk mate (Danny Pudi) as well as with the rest of his colleagues. His alienation deepens when he discovers a room he’s told doesn’t exist – a place that unleashes his true potential, leading to an ascent up the corporate ladder. Buoyed by his newfound confidence, Orson invites a receptionist (Sarah Gadon) into his sanctuary, sparking a climactic clash between the corporate world’s harsh realities and his own wild fantasies.
Festival reviews are rather mixed. But the trailer looks amusing.

It's about Hirayama (Kôji Yakusho) who seems utterly content with his simple life as a cleaner of toilets in Tokyo. Outside of his very structured everyday routine he enjoys his passion for music and for books. And he loves trees and takes photos of them. A series of unexpected encounters gradually reveal more of his past.
Yakusho was awarded the Best Actor prize a few weeks ago in Cannes.

After Joel tried his hand in Shakespeare, Ethan Coen (Raising Arizona, Fargo, Burn After Reading) goes it alone with a lighter comedy caper. It follows Jamie (Margaret Qualley), an uninhibited free spirit bemoaning yet another breakup with a girlfriend, and her demure friend Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan) who desperately needs to loosen up. In search of a fresh start, the two embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee, but things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals along the way. Beanie Feldstein, Pedro Pascal, Colman Domingo, Bill Camp and Matt Damon are also part of the cast.

Redband trailer for the origin story of the Marvel villain, set before his iconic rivalry with Spider-Man and how exactly he became to be. After an encounter that came too close to death at a young age, Sergei Kravinoff (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) is gifted with the instincts of a true predator and the thirst for the hunt. Ariana DeBose, Fred Hechinger, Alessandro Nivola, Christopher Abbott and Russell Crowe are also part of the cast. Interestingly, directed by J.C. Chandor (A Most Violent Year, Margin Call, All is Lost).
Takes place in Sony's Spider-Man Universe (Venom, Morbius) and seems to try to distinguish itself by its brutal violence.

Their path towards this honourable goal is clouded by the man’s alcoholism, lost phone numbers, not knowing each other’s names or addresses, and life’s general tendency to place obstacles in the way of those seeking their happiness.
Was well-received last month in Cannes.

As time on his work visa runs out, a job assisting an erratic art-world outcast (Tilda Swinton) becomes his only hope to stay in the country and realize his dream. From writer/director Julio Torres comes a surreal adventure through the equally treacherous worlds of New York City and the U.S. Immigration system. Isabella Rossellini narrates, Greta Lee and narrated are also part of the cast. It's also written and directed by Torres, who has worked as a writer for Saturday Night Live.
Was well received at the SXSW Film Festival.

Another trailer for this upcoming movie based on the Mattel toys, this time with hints that there actually will indeed be a plot. To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken (Ryan Gosling). Barbies will be portrayed by Margot Robbie, Kate McKinnon, Emma Mackey, Alexandra Shipp and Issa Rae. Also part of the cast are Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Michael Cera and Kingsley Ben-Adir, Helen Mirren will narrate. Directed by Greta Gerwig (Little Women, Lady Bird), co-written by her and Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, White Noise, Frances Ha).
Looks all still very colourful.

Low budget, low key sci-fi drama with comedic elements about Billy (Mark Duplass) and Ray (Sterling K. Brown), two lifelong best friends, brothers from another mother – and the last two men on earth. Their survival is largely due to Ray, a brilliant scientist who designed a domed structure with all the systems necessary to sustain life on a planet that could no longer support it. A hydroponic garden provides fresh vegetables and a carefully managed fishpond supplies essential protein. Recently, however, fish have begun dying at an alarming rate.

Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks will reprise their roles from two different stage productions. Also part of the cast are Taraji P. Franchises have to be milked, so here's an origin story, set 64 years before Katniss Everdeen volunteered as tribute, and decades before Coriolanus Snow became the tyrannical President of Panem. It follows a young Coriolanus (Tom Blyth) who is the last hope for his failing lineage, the once-proud Snow family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With his livelihood threatened, he's reluctantly assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), a tribute from the impoverished District 12. But after her charm captivates the audience of Panem, Snow sees an opportunity to shift their fates. Peter Dinklage, Jason Schwartzman and Viola Davis are also part of the cast. Directed by Francis Lawrence (Red Sparrow, Constantine, I Am Legend), who also directed most of the previous instalments.

It's a thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it. The more plain summary is, it tells the story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) and his role in the development of the atomic bomb. Also part of the extensive cast are Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Rami Malek, Florence Pugh, Benny Safdie, Michael Angarano, Josh Hartnett and Kenneth Branagh.
Still set to be released on the same July weekend as Barbie.

A documentary/thriller hybrid based on the verbatim dialogue from the unedited transcript of an FBI recording of the arrest of Reality Winner in June 2017. The audience witnesses the protagonist (Sydney Sweeney) arriving at her home in Georgia, only to be met by two men outside who politely inform her that they have a search warrant. What follows is a chamber piece focusing on the interrogation of whistle-blower Reality Winner and the search of her home.
The transcript was first turned into a play by director Tina Satter. The movie version received very good reviews earlier this year in Berlin. Will start streaming on HBOMax May 29th.

She’s math-tutoring her skater-boy crush (Jaboukie Young-White), who only seems to admire her for her fractals, and she’s prevented from hanging out with the cool kids at the beach because her over-protective supermom (Toni Collette), has forbade Ruby from ever getting in the water. But when she breaks her mom’s #1 rule, she will discover that she is a direct descendant of the warrior Kraken queens and is destined to inherit the throne from her commanding grandmother (Jane Fonda), the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas.

Strange Way of Life - Extraña forma de vida     HD720p 48MB
Short trailer for a Western short film by Pedro Almodóvar (Volver, Talk to Her, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown). A man (Pedro Pascal) rides a horse across the desert that separates him from Bitter Creek. He comes to visit Sheriff Jake (Ethan Hawke). Twenty-five years earlier, both the sheriff and Silva, the rancher who rides out to meet him, worked together as hired gunmen. Silva visits him with the excuse of reuniting with his friend from his youth, and they do indeed celebrate their meeting, but the next morning Sheriff Jake tells him that the reason for his trip is not to go down the memory lane of their old friendship.
I can't say for sure, but I would assume that Almodóvar is making fun of the traditional male Western image. It will have a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival later this month, which gives me the opportunity to link to the full festival lineup.

Second trailer for this much delayed comic book adaptation, still scheduled to be released in June. Worlds collide when Barry (Ezra Miller) uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, he becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod (Michael Shannon) has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian… albeit not the one he’s looking for. Also part of the cast are Sasha Calle, Ron Livingston, Maribel Verdú, Kiersey Clemons, Antje Traue, Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck. Directed by Andy Muschietti (It, It Chapter Two).

Juggling tenuous relationships, financial pressures and serious internal struggles, the two ballers - opposites who are seemingly miles apart - find they might have more in common than they imagined possible.
I don't think I've ever seen the original, so I can only say that this looks quite entertaining. Will start streaming on Hulu May 19th.

A battle of wills ensues over the course of one incredibly fraught night, with both struggling to keep the upper hand as the power dynamics swing wildly back and forth.
Festival reviews are favourable. I think I want to see this.

It takes place in a fictional American desert town circa 1955, where the itinerary of a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention (organized to bring together students and parents from across the country for fellowship and scholarly competition) is spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events. While many of the usual cast members make an appearance, there are also a large number of actors that I believe haven't yet starred in an Anderson movie, among them, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Margot Robbie, Maya Hawke, Steve Carell, Matt Dillon and Hong Chau.

After the memorable teaser, the first trailer with some meaningful footage for this upcoming movie based on the Mattel toys. The summary so far reads: To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken (Ryan Gosling). Barbies will be portrayed by Margot Robbie, Kate McKinnon, Emma Mackey, Alexandra Shipp and Issa Rae. Also part of the cast are Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Michael Cera and Kingsley Ben-Adir, Helen Mirren will narrate. Directed by Greta Gerwig (Little Women, Lady Bird), co-written by her and Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, White Noise, Frances Ha).
Looking forward to the out-takes of the last scene. It will be a bit of a challenge to endure the colours for a full-length movie.

Aided by an unnervingly gifted psychic (Alice Braga), he simultaneously pursues and is pursued by a lethal specter (William Fichtner) - the one man he believes holds the key to finding the missing girl - only to discover more than he ever bargained for. Directed by Robert Rodriguez (Alita: Battle Angel, Sin City, From Dusk Till Dawn).
I think I'll wait for some reviews to see if this story will be worth the time.

Adaptation of a young-adult novel into a family adventure fantasy movie that centers on Paul Carpenter (Patrick Gibson,) and Sophie Pettingel (Sophie Wilde), lowly, put-upon interns who begin working at the mysterious London firm J.W. Wells & Co., and become increasingly aware that their employers are anything but conventional. Charismatic villains Humphrey Wells (Christoph Waltz), the CEO of the company, and middle manager Dennis Tanner (Sam Neill) are disrupting the world of magic by bringing modern corporate strategy to ancient magical practices, and Paul and Sophie discover the true agenda of the vast corporation. Miranda Otto, Rachel House and Jessica De Gouw are also part of the cast.
In some countries it is set to have a theatrical release, but mostly it will be available for streaming. For example, on Sky in the UK and MGM+ in the US.

Since I consider Ana de Armas to be the by far best thing about the most recent Bond movie, I'm looking forward to this. Will start streaming on AppleTV+ April 21st.

Another re-boot of the franchise, this time it's another animated version. After years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts. Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them. The turtles are voiced by unknown actors, better known names are Paul Rudd, Maya Rudolph, Hannibal Buress, Rose Byrne, John Cena, Jackie Chan, Ice Cube and Seth Rogen. The latter one also has a producing credit. Co-directed by Jeff Rowe and Kyler Spears who previously were involved in the making of The Mitchells vs the Machines.

Unfortunately for these stormtroopers, this is no ordinary miner, but rather a mythic one-man army who epitomizes the quintessential Finnish concept of “sisu” — a white-knuckled form of courage and unimaginable determination in the face of overwhelming odds. It seems fair to say that Carl Nargle is more than just a little bit inspired by Bob Ross.
